Taylor Swift has been accused of being a lot of different things in her time. But a new, bizarre challenger approaches! If you haven’t heard of the “The Taylor Swift Curse”, strap in, because this one is a wild ride.

First up, meet the Los Angeles Kings. The Kings are a team in the National Hockey League, and in the early 2010s they were on a roll – they won the Stanley Cup (the equivalent of the grand final) in both 2012 and 2014, while also advancing to the finals in 2013 between championships.

In 2015, however, that all changed – somehow, the Kings ended up down the bottom of the ladder at the end of the season, and things have stayed that way for the past four years.

So, what does all of this have to do with T-Swizz? Glad you asked. In August 2015, the Staples Center – the arena in which the Kings play – raised a commemorative banner in honour of the singer. It was to mark Swift’s 16th sold-out performance at the venue, which is a record held to this very day.

If you’ve already put two and two together, congratulations: The Kings and their supporters are somehow under the impression that the timing of their losing streak with the Swifty banner going up is more than coincidence. Hence, “The Taylor Swift Curse” was born – and the team has taken action (via Consequence Of Sound).

From now on, when the Kings play at the Staples Center, the Taylor Swift banner will be covered up. A spokesman for the Kings stated that fans “have made it clear that the banner shouldn’t be part of their Kings game experience,” adding that it’s an “opportunity to show our fans we hear them.”

NBA team the Los Angeles Clippers have also taken up the initiative, while also going the extra mile of petty by covering up the banner of fellow LA basketball team the Lakers. Really, why not? Let’s go all-in with this conspiracy theory and see how we end up.

Is the curse lifting? Well, the Kings won their opening match against Nashville 7-4, so you be the judge, Mr. Scientist.

Swift, in a move surprising absolutely no-one, is yet to respond to the Kings and Clippers’ actions.
