Feeling confused about which Sydney suburbs are going into lockdown? We’ve got you covered.

In light of the growing COVID-19 outbreak in Sydney over the last week, NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian announced this morning that some parts of the city will under stay-at-home orders (AKA go into lockdown).

“The advice from [NSW] Health is we don’t want to see this situation linger for week,” said Berejiklian. “We would like to see this situation end sooner rather than later.”

The lockdown will start at 11:59pm tonight, Friday June 25, and is, so far, only supposed to last until midnight next Friday, July 2.

With different areas of the city now under different restrictions, things have gotten a little confusing — but these maps on the NSW Health website can help.

Who Is Going Into Lockdown?

The lockdown is only being imposed in four LGAs: City of Sydney, Randwick, Waverley, and Woollahra.

These areas have been asked to stay at home unless they have an essential reason to leave, like buying groceries, exercise, or going to work if you can’t do your job from home.

The Seven LGAs

Earlier in the week, the Premier announced that seven specific LGAs would not be allowed travel to anywhere outside of ‘metropolitan Sydney’.

The four areas now going into lockdown made up four of these LGAs, the other three were Bayside, Inner West, and Canada Bay.

There was a lot of confusion about what constitutes ‘metropolitan Sydney’, despite the Premier stating that she thinks “people know”.

But the map below from the NSW Health website shows what that area actually is.

And, to clarify — because the Bayside, Inner West, and Canada Bay areas will not be locked down — people in these areas will still able to travel within the ‘metropolitan Sydney’ area.

The Wider Restriction Area

Because the COVID cases identified in NSW over the last week have only been in Sydney, there’s a catchment zone within which various restrictions apply.

Outside of this area, no restrictions are in place for NSW.

Various other restrictions are still in place — and have been extended to next Friday too — for anywhere that falls within this catchment zone.

These include mandatory mask-wearing indoors for all non-residential locations, including gyms, pubs and shops, and various other restrictions which can be found on the NSW Health website.
