Good news! We finally know the release date for Stranger Things season 3 — it’s coming on July 4th 2019, 183 days from now. That might seem like a long wait, but thankfully the good people at Netflix have also released a new teaser trailer full of clues to keep us busy until then. Let’s get cracking.

You might remember that the last teaser trailer that dropped back in December was also full of clues, which hinted at the episode titles. The new trailer might seem like it’s just sixty seconds of suspenseful but meaningless images, but look closer and you’ll find there’s actually a few new clues in there. Watch the video first, then we’ll start decoding it.

Hawkins NYE | Stranger Things S3 | Netflix

🎉🎉Welcome to 1985!🎉🎉 Stranger Things Season 3, July 4th

Posted by Netflix on Monday, 31 December 2018

The new teaser trailer starts as a New Year’s Eve news broadcast from the town of Hawkins in 1985. Tellingly, this broadcast is sponsored by Starcourt Mall, which was a location mentioned in one of the episode titles from the December teaser trailer. Starcourt Mall was also a setting revealed in a teaser trailer released way back in July 2018, which is about to become really important (go and watch it now if you haven’t already).

Back to the latest teaser trailer: exactly 11 (get it?) seconds in, the broadcast glitches and fills with static. Then we see a shot of flickering green computer terminal text scrolling past — pause it at 14 seconds and you’ll see a secret message has appeared:

A secret message in the latest Stranger Things season three teaser trailer: when blue and yellow meet in the west.

The secret message: “When blue and yellow meet in the west”

The message reads “when blue and yellow meet in the west”. That might seem meaningless, but this is also a phrase we’ve seen before. Back in October, an official Stranger Things behind-the-scenes companion book was released. Hidden in that book were a few lines of morse code, which the Reddit community quickly translated. Here’s what it said:

Page 22: the week is long

Page 62: the silver cat feeds

Page 79: when blue and yellow meet

Page 80: in the west

Page 172: a trip to china sounds nice

Page 209: if you tread lightly

Notice something familiar? That’s right: the morse code on pages 79 and 80 translated to “when yellow and blue meet in the west” — the same clue in the new teaser trailer.

Here’s where that Starcourt Mall teaser from July 2018 becomes important: 38 seconds in, there’s a shot of a clock on the wall of Starcourt Mall, which has blue and yellow hands.

The Starcourt Mall clock with blue and yellow hands from the Stranger Things teaser.

Here’s the Starcourt Mall clock, with blue and yellow hands.

Now, this could be nothing, but the good people at Reddit have been theorising that maybe this clock is related to the clue in the morse code. If you imagine a clock face as a compass, west is on the left, so fans are theorising that the precise time at which the blue and yellow hand meet on the left side of the clock is going to be crucial to the show.

Some people reckon that means 9:45 is the crucial time, while others are arguing that the hour hand would have moved on by then, and that the closest the the blue and yellow hands come to meeting in the west is 8:44. Then again, this is Stranger Things — people have pointed out that if we’re in the Upside Down, perhaps the clock needs to be flipped, making the time when the hands meet closer to 3:15.

But what does that mean? There are all kinds of theories out there — some people are using the times to locate Bible verses and see whether there are clues in those. Head over to Reddit if you want to go real deep on this one.

Then again, blue and yellow could have nothing to do with the clock at all. As the beautiful new poster released with the teaser trailer reveals, Eleven and Mike are wearing blue and yellow — and have been wearing these colours in quite a few costumes throughout the series.

Lynx Corp And “The Silver Cat Feeds”

Phew, okay, we’ve made it 14 seconds through the teaser trailer. The next clue, as far as we can tell, emerges at around the 25 second mark, with another screen full of computer terminal text. This one begins with the words “Welcome to Lynx Corp” — a second later, someone runs a program called “SilverCatFeeds.exe”.

Could Lynx Corp be related to the silver cat?

“Silver cat feeds” was also one of the morse code messages contained in the behind the scenes book. Lynx Corp is also something we’ve seen before — specifically, people have spotted trucks on the Stranger Things set that feature the Lynx Corp logo (a silver cat, as it turns out).

Alright, that’s all we’ve got, but we’ve almost certainly missed something. Head over to the Stranger Things subreddit if you want to check out the latest theories. Alternatively, join us in the comments with your theories, we’d love to hear them. We’ll see you for the next teaser trailer.
