At the start of December each year, Spotify drop a truck-load of listening statistics. And with this NYE also counting as the end of the decade, we’ve got a lot of numbers to crunch and fingers to point. Let’s dig in.

First, 2019. According to Spotify, Australia was obsessed with Post Malone this year, with the rapper nabbing both spots for top-streamed act and track for ‘Sunflower’, his Spider-Verse soundtrack song with Swae Lee. On the artist front, we then respectively see Khalid, Billie Eilish, Ed Sheeran and Ariana Grande make up our top 5 streamed artists. That more or less makes sense.

Things are a little more interesting when it comes to Australia’s top songs. After ‘Sunflower’, we’ve got Tones and I’s massive ‘Dance Monkey’, which beats out Billie Eilish’s ‘bad guy’, despite that song coming out in January. Guess that’s what happens when your song spends 17 weeks and counting at the #1 spot.

Rounding out Australia’s top five most-listened songs for 2019 is another Post track, ‘Wow.’, then Lewis Capaldi’s ‘Someone You Loved’.

Spotify has also broken down the most streamed track by our major cities. Melbourne, ever obsessed with appearing different, went with ‘bad guy’, while Brisbane, Sydney, Perth, Adelaide, Canberra and Townsville stayed with ‘Sunflower’. Both Hobart and Darwin picked different ‘baby sleep’ tracks. This suggests there are either a lot of sleep-deprived parents down South and up North, or the edges of Australia are slowly evolving into somnambulist humans, more powerful than the rest of us. Who knows?

Then there’s the decade front, which takes in the whole world’s listening habits. Drake, who released five albums and three mixtapes in the ’00s, reigned supreme as the most-streamed artist. Surprise!

Ed Sheeran sits at #2, but ‘Shape Of You’ is officially the biggest song of the ’10s, taking out the most-streamed track. Post Malone, Ariana Grande and Eminem follow, respectively. Remember that Taylor Swift didn’t have her music on the service until 2017, for what that’s worth.

Find a whole heap of more statistics below, and stay tuned for Spotify’s annual ‘Wrapped’ function, which allows you to look back at your own top tracks, artists, genres and a whole heap more. We’ve been told it’s dropping in the next few days — when it’s up, you’ll find it here.
