Despite ongoing competition from the likes of Apple Music, Tidal, Google Play and like, vinyl I guess, Spotify continues to be the undisputed king of music streaming services.

The Swedish-born app’s annual year in review rundown has dropped for 2018 and once again it gives us insight into what our lil’ country is getting down to.

The most surprising takeaway up front is that Aussies are streaming a whole lot more country music than ever before, skyrocketing us up the list to the third biggest yeehaw fans in the world, just behind the US and Canada. While there’s no further deets in the report on how or why this happened, I think we can safely chalk this one up to the impact of a certain Miss Kylie Minogue.

‘Golden’ fucking slapped, fight me.

Hip-hop and rap once again dominated our streams though, with three of the top five most-streamed artists of the year, Drake, Post Malone and XXXTENTACION (ugh gross) all coming from the genre which is experiencing a new peak thanks to a huge influx of the likes of so-called Soundcloud rappers.

Canadian hip-hop star Drake was the most streamed artist for Aussies this year, ending Ed Sheeran’s three-year run at the top, and also taking out bragging rights for most streamed song with ‘God’s Plan’. Post Malone grabbed the gong for most streamed album though, with Beerbongs & Bentleys no doubt appealing to our deep-seated adoration for binge drinking and automobiles.

This year unfortunately didn’t see too many female-fronted tunes up the top of Spotify’s lists. Once the blokes are punted from the stats though, Ariana, Taylor and Dua Lipa take pride and place as Australia’s most streamed female artists with Sia, Julia Stone and Amy Shark the top three local streaming ladies.

Other tidbits from the review see 5 Seconds of Summer maintain a healthy premise in our country’s headphones, our mums and dads are still absolutely frothing Fleetwood Mac on the regular and (how’s this) the most streamed release from Spotify themselves was a live recording of the daughter of the dude who made the TV show Scrubs. Yes, that is a real statistic.

Have a look at this little infographic Spotify has put together for ya here, and see the full list of streaming results below:
