Stop Tony Meow: A Chrome Extension That Replaces Pictures Of Tony Abbott With Adorable Cats

We now live in a world where, as of today, you can download an Chrome extension that will automatically replace pictures of Tony Abbott with pictures of kittens.

On news sites, official government webpages, and anywhere a photo of Tony Abbott appears, this app will make that picture of Tony Abbott go away, and replace it with a picture of a cat.

Easy, now. Remember to breathe.

The ‘Stop Tony Meow’ app was released yesterday afternoon by Twitter hero Dan Nolan, app designer Matt Kelsh, and software developer Ken Taylor, and if you don’t follow those links to their Twitter pages to pledge them your firstborn child, you can get the hell out.

There’s no data yet on how many Internets the world has burned through in the scramble to download the app, but preliminary estimates suggest it’s around eight Internets so far. Maybe nine.

The app only works on photos tagged with the phrase “Tony Abbott,” so it’s not foolproof — but if you’re honestly quibbling over that about something that leaves you with noticeably less Tony Abbott and more cats in your life, you don’t deserve to have this app, or a happy existence.

It is deeply unclear at this early stage how far-reaching an effect this will have on us as a society — indeed, as a nation. A national holiday? A new calendar? A fundamental reworking of our liberal participatory democracy to a better, more cat-based model? It is simply too early to tell.

At the very least, we can take comfort in the certainty that, all around this great country, pictures of Tony Abbott are being replaced with pictures of cats doing adorable things. Shine on, Australia. Shine on.
