One Of The Parkland Survivors Has Shouted Out This Friday’s School Strike For Climate Action
"Keep fighting, keep speaking, keep standing up."
One of the survivors of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting has given a shout-out to the organisers of the School Strike 4 Climate rally, calling on young people to fight for the issues they’re passionate about.
Like many of her classmates, 17-year-old Mei-Ling Ho-Shing turned to activism after a gunman killed 17 people at her Parkland, Florida high school in February 2018. On Wednesday, she recorded a video message encouraging young people to take part in the climate strike, which is set to take place this Friday in cities around Australia and the world.
“I heard you guys are going to do a climate strike, and I am so proud of you guys,” Ho-Shing said. “It’s so important as youth for us to galvanise each other and the stuff that we truly care about, and that we’re passionate about.”
“Keep fighting, keep speaking, keep standing up, keep resisting, and fight until we get what we need. Because if we don’t get it, and no one does it for us, then we’ll never get anything done.”
The first Australian school strike back in November saw thousands of students call on the government to take action on climate change. Scott Morrison responded by telling them to get back to class, thus demonstrating exactly why they needed to strike in the first place.
