The xx lead singer Romy Madley Croft has just released ‘Lifetime’, the lead single off her pending debut solo album. Reminiscent of the dancier tracks on the trio’s 2017 album I See You, ‘Lifetime’ is a hazy disco dream.

Croft teamed up with producers Fred Again… and Marta Salogni for the track, which exists comfortably in relation to The xx’s music, albeit more up-tempo. But some things never change, as Croft pines over the love of a lifetime —  though this song was inspired by the distance of our COVID-19 lockdown, and the desire to be on a dancefloor with friends and lovers again.

Croft announced she was releasing a solo album under the mononym Romy back in April, saying it would be a “fun” collection, inspired by “club classics”.

“I guess one of the main inspirations and things that I love is club classics – Ibiza house, trance music, stuff that you can really dance to but also sing along to,” she said over Instagram live.”What I realised was a lot of those club classics are big songs as well as just being fun to dance to.”

In the Instagram Live, she also debuted a song called ‘Weightless’ — a Jamie xx remix of the track also popped up during his BBC Radio 1 Essentials mix back in April. Jamie also released his first new solo music in five years in April, with ‘Idontknow’.

The xx have new music on the way too, though neither it nor Romy’s solo album have a release date. For now, find ‘Lifetime’ and a rip of ‘Weightless’ beelow.
