It has been almost six years since we lost the comedic genius of Robin Williams to death by suicide, a passing that devastated many. There was much speculation surrounding his death at the time, with a lot of conjecture about his financial situation, or the state of his depression. Now, a new documentary is being released that explores his final days in detail, and the hidden neurological disease that was only discovered after his death.

Robin’s widow Susan Schneider Williams features in the documentary, and said in a statement that, “During the last year of his life, Robin was confronted with anxiety, paranoia, insomnia, scary altered realities and a roller coaster of hope and despair. With our medical team’s care, we chased a relentless parade of symptoms but with very little gain. It wasn’t until after Robin’s passing, in autopsy, that the source of his terror was revealed: he had diffuse Lewy body disease. It was one of the worst cases medical professionals had seen.”

The filmmakers behind Robin’s Wish explain “For the first time, Robin’s fight against a deadly neurodegenerative disorder, known as Lewy Body Dementia, is shown in stunning detail. Through a gripping journalistic lens, this incredible story sheds an entirely new light on the tragedy, beauty and power behind the mind of one of the greatest entertainers of all time.”

The trailer shows that that doco will be filled with behind-the-scenes footage from Robin’s life, and interviews with the people that were closest to him.

It’s released on September 1st.
