X Gon’ Give It To Ya In This ‘Resident Evil 2’ Mod

Resident Evil 2 is a video game in which X repeatedly and persistently attempts to give it to you – “it” being a brick-sized fist to the face. Fortunately, there is now a mod that will provide you with the appropriate soundtrack to die to.

Released late last month, Resident Evil 2 tells the story of Leon Kennedy’s terrible, horrible, no good, very bad first day at work. Along with uni student Clare Redfield, the game follows the rookie cop’s attempts to escape Raccoon City after a biological weapon transforms its citizens into zombies – all of whom are doing their darnedest to eat his face off.

This is, by anyone’s standards, a bad situation. But there’s an even more terrifying threat than a horde of bitey zombies, and it comes in a trench coat and fedora.

Throughout the game, the player is stalked by a gargantuan hulk called T-00, also known as Mr X. This genetically engineered terror golem’s sole purpose in life is to end yours, and unfortunately for you, he is a very goal-oriented individual.

There’s a sense of inevitability as Mr X marches after you at a steady, threatening pace. It’s like watching your mother approach when you know full well you didn’t wash the dishes like she asked you to.

Mr X is also immune to bullets, and melee damage, and presumably hurt feelings. Throwing a grenade at him might buy you some time, but your best bet is to hide and hope he goes away, just like dealing with any other problem.

However, one modder has managed to make X a little less mind-numbingly terrifying.

Using a PC copy of the game, modder DJ Pop dug into the game’s files to create a mod that replaces the game’s instrumental tune ‘Black Impact’. The result is that, as Mr X approaches, Resident Evil 2 will blast DMX’s 2003 banger ‘X Gon’ Give It To Ya’ as though he is carrying a giant boombox on one shoulder, or entering a wrestling arena.

The song even fades as you place some distance between yourself and the ogre-like personification of a fist, so you can use it to gauge the imminence of your death.

The mod probably won’t reduce instances of Mr X bashing your head in, but at least you’ll be able to listen to a great tune during your last moments of ear ownership. If you’d like X to give it to you, the mod can be found here, along with instructions on how to install it.
