When The Purge: Election Year began production, there wasn’t a possibility that the next president of the United States would be a violence-inciting bigot who suggested that building a wall along the border of Mexico would keep criminals out of the U.S. And yet, here we are!

Now that the trailer for the third instalment of writer/director James DeMonaco‘s horror series has been released, a dystopian America that is controlled by relentless violence, fear and exploitation of the poor by the rich, doesn’t seem that far-fetched. The creators of The Purge may not have been inspired by a Donald Trump presidency initially but their tagline, “Keep America Great”, makes it clear that they’re sure as hell running with the association now.

For those unfamiliar with the trilogy, The Purge is set in a not-too distant future in which the government sanctions one night a year when all crime is legal and all emergency services are shut down. ‘The Purge’ is meant to be a catharsis for the American population, resulting in dramatic drops in crime and unemployment rates, but really it’s just a method of population control because the poor (who can’t afford protection) are the easiest targets.

The Purge: Election Year is particularly creepy because we see the political machine who runs the purge, including white male politicians plotting revenge on blonde female senators who oppose their ruthless tactics, while their fanatical supporters chant and pray.

Hm. Hoping Donald Trump doesn’t catch this one.

The Purge: Election Year is out July 14.
