Splendour in the Grass punters were treated to a pretty massive surprise on Saturday afternoon, when Bernard Fanning turned his solo set into a mini Powderfinger reunion — the band’s first show since 2015, and their highest-profile gig since calling it quits in 2010.

But it turns out not every band member actually got the memo that the ‘Finger were reuiniting. Powderfinger drummer Jon Coghill wasn’t on stage at Splendour, and told the ABC this morning that he only found out about the performance because a friend in the audience messaged him.

It’s like that time you didn’t get invited to your mate’s birthday party… except way, way worse.

“When I heard about it, someone texted me to say, ‘Oh I loved the gig’ and stuff like that,” Coghill said. “I just thought, what’s going on? And I saw it, and I thought ‘oh that’s a bit strange’. So I was a bit surprised, but it is what it is.”

“All the other guys went down to Splendour. I didn’t go because I haven’t been for a few years because we got the young kids and it’s a bit hard at the moment,” he said. “So they got together on a bit of a whim and went up on stage and played with Bernie.”

Coghill and Bernard spoke over text yesterday, with Fanning assuring him that it was a “last minute thing” and that coverage of the set has “been blown out of proportion.”

“You got to remember that we were together for 20 years and for about the first 10 years of that … I was a bit of a mean guy who didn’t like to lose an argument,” Coghill added. “So if those guys feel like there’s a bit of bad blood, I don’t blame them. But I really don’t think there is, I think [the set was] completely innocent and it’s been taken out of proportion.”

He’s since tweeted that the whole thing “was a bit of a misunderstanding”.

Coghill also let slip to the ABC that the band were meeting with their management this week, but he wouldn’t say if it was about a potential reunion tour.
