2018 may be in its dying breaths, but it’s still got a few punches yet to throw. Today, one of them has clipped our ears: trop-house DJ, rapper and international man Pitbull has released ‘Ocean To Ocean’, a song for the impending Aquaman film which samples Toto’s ‘Africa’.

By ‘samples’, we mean Pitbull has taken ‘Africa’ and rapped some aquatic lyrics over it. “From Ocean to Ocean, they’re going to have to deal with me,” he begins — and for 2 minutes and 25 seconds, we do. A singer called Rhea sings the chorus. It’s a song!

This has a real ‘end credits’ feel, in that it ever so tangentially relates to Aquaman. ‘Africa’ sounds vaguely aquatic, and Pitbull’s flex of strength in the face of adversity (‘I’m the living Great Gatsby’, he says, having possibly stopped watching the Baz Luhrmann remake about 30 minutes in) is superhero-esque, we guess?

‘Africa’ has had a pretty good run this year — its ongoing meme status continued after Weezer were cyber-bullied into covering it by a 14-year-old, and the ’80s band are even coming to Australia in a few weeks for Falls Festival and sideshows. The rains may have provided blessings for the past 30 years, but now, they’re being tested. If anyone can put an end to it, it’s Pitbull. Aka Mr. 305. Aka Mr. Worldwide.
