[Update August 25]: People never learn.

After Opals star Liz Cambage called out her teammate Alice Kunek for an ignorant costume over the weekend, Australia’s been thrown into another debate about blackface. And by ‘debate’, I mean: thousands of people who’ve apparently never read a book or listened to a person of colour before have surfaced to scream at the rest of us about a fact decided literally decades ago.

Enter Bjorn Stewart from Sydney’s Cope St Collective:

Cope St is an arts collective named after the Redfern home of Black Theatre: an indigenous-run performance space that’s been running since 1972. As a “response and acknowledgement” of this, Bjorn and the other artists make theatre, film and multi-media work based around the notions of Australian identity. “Our mission is to create works that relate and reflect the multicultural Australia that we are immersed in,” their website reads.

It’s fairly disconcerting that today’s examination of “multicultural Australia” has to include a makeup tutorial on blackface.
