People Still Can’t Decide If They’re Happy Or Angry About The All-Female ‘Ocean’s Eleven’
Anne Hathaway and Rihanna were added to the cast today.
Since it was announced that Sandra Bullock and Cate Blanchett were going to lead an all-female Ocean’s Eleven film called Ocean’s Eight, the reaction has been decidedly mixed. On one hand, films with a mostly female cast (particularly blockbuster action films) are still incredibly rare. On the other hand, can’t women have their own goddamn stories instead of having to remake old ones?
Today it was announced that Rihanna and Anne Hathaway have joined Bullock, Blanchett, Helena Bonham Carter, Mindy Kaling and rapper Awkwafina, which makes for a very motley crew of performers. Personally, I would pay good money to see Cate Blanchett and Rihanna even just have a conversation, but others aren’t so easily convinced.
While the casting news seems to have had a positive reaction, on social media many are questioning why this movie even needs to exist. Some of the criticism stems from the plot revolving around stealing a necklace at the Met Ball, which sounds less badass than casing three casinos. When it comes to Ocean’s Eight, Twitter is divided.
If a female Ghostbusters ruined your childhood, I can't wait for Oceans 8 to put you in a coma.

Ok can we skip past the awkward kitschy reboot phase and just start writing original movies with women in them? #Oceans8

Dear Hollywood,
Fire whoever came up with the idea of gender reversal movies.
Yes, you thought they were a genius.
But no.#Oceans8

1000x more excited about Awkwafina/Rihanna/Mindy in #Oceans8 than Hathaway/HBC/Bullock tbhhttps://t.co/qXIrYGzb1e

Let's face it: you don't really need eleven. Ladies can get it done with eight. #oceans8

All I know is, if Rihanna doesn’t sing and dance in this film I will be deeply upset.
