Put women in film, and they'll come and see it? Revolutionary.

Hooray, it’s the greatest heist of the century — all the boss women in cool power suits from the all-female Ocean’s 8 have stolen the opening weekend box-office record away from the original film in the popular crime franchise. And more importantly, they did it while looking fabulous.

The star-studded film includes such luminaries as Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Anne Hathaway, Rihanna, Sarah Paulson, Mindy Kaling, Helena Bonham Carter and Awkwafina, as well as such inexplicables as the bizarrely persistent James Corden.

And, once again shitting all over the concept of female-led films as box-office poison, Ocean’s 8 pulled in an estimated $41.5 million during its first three days in theatres, according to Forbes.

Even allowing for inflation and the respective costs of the films, that handily beats the opening-weekend figures for Ocean’s Twelve ($39.2 million), Ocean’s Eleven ($38.1 million), and Ocean’s Thirteen ($36.1 million)

According to Box Office Mojo, 69 percent of Ocean’s 8 opening-weekend viewers were women, which is both extremely nice and very logical.

Put women in film, and I guess they’ll come and see it? Revolutionary.

Meanwhile, the big lady-heist movie isn’t getting such an overwhelming victory with reviews, however Rolling Stone probably accurately summarised the film in their review:

“Yes, the plot has more holes than a wheel of Swiss cheese and director Gary Ross (The Hunger Games) lets the script he wrote with Olivia Milch go slack in its mid-section, but odds are you won’t give a fuck.”

It’s a really, really fun film, and particular attention is being given to Anne Hathaway’s brilliant and funny portrayal of a vapid, anxious starlet.
