7News reporters Rebecca Maddern and Mike Amor have made headlines themselves after leaked footage revealed the pair calling Novak Djokovic an “asshole” while preparing for a nightly news broadcast.

The world number one tennis player has been the subject of headlines all week after his visa was revoked, then reinstated after an exhausting legal battle against the Australian government. But despite his visa being reinstated, the 7News hosts didn’t hold back their feelings.

“Whatever way you look at it, Novak Djokovic is a lying, sneaking asshole,” Maddern said in the leaked footage.

“You’ve got a bullshit fucking excuse and then he fell over his own fucking lies. That’s what happens right?” Amor said in reply, agreeing with Maddern that Djokovic is an “asshole.”

“It is unfortunate that everyone stuffed up around him,” Maddern added. “I don’t think anything was gained by putting him in immigration hotels.”

Maddern also asserted that while most “fair minded people would say the bloke is an asshole”, they might question if Australian border authorities did the right thing.

The leaked footage comes just one week after Maddern joined the 7News team, which she called the “job of a lifetime” after leaving Channel 9 last year. It’s worth noting that the footage was illegally recorded and leaked, and Channel 7 is investigating who leaked the private conversation; Seven Melbourne managing director Lewis Martin told 3AW that the company is looking into the incident. “There has been an illegal recording of a private conversation,” Martin told 3AW. “It is something that is going to be looked at and is being looked at thoroughly.

“We are going to have an outcome. What has happened here is illegal. People’s motivation for why they have done this can vary from well-intended, (to) naive, to a more sinister outcome.”

It is unclear if charges will be pressed against the person responsible for distributing the footage but Martin stressed that this is a legal matter.

“We have to be very careful here because this is a legal matter, there has been an (illegal) recording of a private conversation,” Martin said. “We are going to have an outcome, I am absolutely determined to see that there is an outcome because what has happened here is illegal.”

Maddern has since apologised to Martin for the ordeal, but he noted that the pair are “entitled to have a private conversation.”
