A fiery two-minute clip from UK comedian Nish Kumar has gone viral after the release of Ricky Gervais’ transphobic Netflix special.

Once again, we find ourselves lumbered with a spate of comedians who think that having a go at trans people is hilarious and brave. So we are grateful for the resurfacing of a blistering two-minute bit from British comedian Nish Kumar that explains — in no uncertain terms — how Ricky Gervais is trafficking in a brand of ‘comedy’ that is anything but.

“Fuck Ricky Gervais, because what he’s doing is not edgy or interesting,” he shrieks. “He seems to think it makes him an edgy or interesting comedian. It’s not. All he is, is the same as every other rich white dude comedian who is too successful, runs out of ideas, and tries to shit on the latest minority.”

“In the 1970s it was my fucking family, it was Black and Minority Ethnic people. In the ’80s it was gay people. Trans people are just the latest to get it in the neck from comedians who can’t be bothered to try at their jobs anymore.”

It gets better, but we won’t spoil the beautiful finale. Listen to the full clip below.

Speaking of British comedians who have been vocal of about their disdain for Ricky Gervais, a clip of James Acaster from his 2019 show COLD LASAGNE HATE MYSELF, where he cosplays as an ‘edgy comedian’ in a chaotic bomber jacket and sunglasses while specifically skewering the myth that liberals are supposed to treat everyone the same.

“Uh, no actually. You can’t treat everyone the same, we haven’t got equality yet,” he points out. “You can’t go treating everyone the same before you’ve got equality.”

He also rips into the perception that targeting an already disempowered community is in any way a challenging or subversive act. “You know who’s long overdue a challenge? The trans community,” he says sarcastically. “Ooh, they’ve had their guard down for too long if you ask me. They’ll be checking their privilege on the way home, you brave little cis boy.”
