Nintendo Is Releasing A New Version Of Its Legendary NES And It Comes With 30 Classic Games
Donkey Kong, Mario, Zelda and more. All the classics are coming back!
Nintendo doesn’t know how to quit. Fresh from conquering the world with the wildly successful Pokémon Go, the gaming giant has announced it is re-releasing its groundbreaking Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) console in a new, “mini” format and bundling it with a stack of classic games.
That’s right folks, the NES is back and it’s smaller than ever. The original console was released in Japan back in 1983 but didn’t make it to Australian shores until four years later. How bleak were the 80’s? Imagine if we had to wait half a decade before getting Pokémon Go. Thank god those dark, dark days are behind us.
The new NES is officially called the “Nintendo Classic Mini: Nintendo Entertainment System” just in case you forget at some point that it’s a Nintendo product. It’s small enough to fit into the palm of your hand, according to promotional material supplied by Nintendo, is powered via USB and comes with a classic NES controller. It’s perfectly sized to sit behind your office computer and plug right into your monitor for a cheeky session of Donkey Kong every now and then when work is getting you down.
The bad news is that the new NES won’t take your old, cassette sized game cartridges. The good news is that it comes preloaded with 30 classic Nintendo games including Donkey Kong, Mario, Castlevania, Kirby’s Adventures, Metroid and The Legend of Zelda. Two-player functionality is also supported and you can even use a Wii Classic Controller so you don’t have to fork out for new gear.
Reggie Fils-Aime, the President of Nintendo America, said the company was re-releasing the NES because “We wanted to give fans of all ages the opportunity to revisit Nintendo’s original system and rediscover why they fell in love with Nintendo in the first place.” Re-releasing the NES and packaging it up with classic, fun titles like Zelda, Mario and Donkey Kong is a sure-fire of getting a whole new generation of gamers to fall in love with Nintendo. Long live the retro revival!
The Nintendo Classic Mini will hit Australian stores from November 10 and will retail for $99.95. So it’s either a shiny new NES or 67 lure modules in Pokémon Go. Tough choice.
