Sorry To This Man: King Charles Will Not Be Going On Our New $5 Banknote
The new design will honour a First Nations person instead.
Word has it that the the new $5 note will no longer feature a member of the British Family.
Yes, we’ve all very accustomed to the face of Queen Elizabeth II staring us dead in the eye when we take to the world with a $5 note in tow, but no more! And none of the other ones either!
Following the recent death of the Queen, the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) reportedly reviewed the design and decided in consultation with the Federal Government that the image would not be replaced with the likeness of another weird royal because they are all “too ugly” [citation needed].
“The Reserve Bank has decided to update the $5 banknote to feature a new design that honours the culture and history of the First Australians,” the statement read, according to the ABC. “This new design will replace the portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. The other side of the $5 banknote will continue to feature the Australian Parliament.”
While I’m personally disappointed that I, arguably one of Junkee’s most prominent Deputy Editors, have not been chosen as the new face of our smallest polymer bill, I concede that this is probably for the best.
“This is a massive win for the grassroots, First Nations people who have been fighting to decolonise this country,” wrote Senator Lidia Thorpe on Twitter today. “First Nations people never ceded our Sovereignty to any King or Queen, ever. Time for a Treaty Republic!”
As you can imagine, other people like Peter Dutton also weighed in, with comments best paraphrased as “waaaaaah.”
