Your Guide To All The Best TV And Movies Streaming In April 2019
April is jampacked with a lotta finales.
Because we live in the exhausting age of peak television, there’s no such thing as a dry month when it comes to what’s available on Netflix, Stan and Foxtel. But even for our oversaturated, content-stuffed age, April 2019 is a big, big month.
Yep, we might be almost a third of a way through the year (somehow), but the major streaming sites aren’t slowing down for a second, and there’s more movies and TV getting dropped across Netflix and Stan throughout the month than you could shake a particularly large stick at.
To that end, here’s our breakdown of what’s coming to the major streaming services in April 2019.
Game of Thrones
If you need me to explain the show Game of Thrones to you, then congratulations, because you’ve obviously managed to score some very cheap and dependable real estate underneath a sturdy rock for the last eight years. Whether you love it, hate it, or have literally never watched a single episode, Game of Thrones is so culturally ubiquitous that everyone has some baseline understanding of what it’s about, even if that understanding is as complex as, “there’s a blonde lady with some dragons, and people are often naked.”
Well, after almost a decade of being on the air, the fantasy epic is drawing to a (presumably very bloody) close. Needless to say, details about the ending have been shrouded in mystery, with even the teaser trailer giving away very little, but it’s probably safe to assume it won’t end with everyone coming together for a big, joyous hug and a hot dinner.

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina
Continuing with the empowered fantasy theme is the second part of Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, Netflix’s enormously popular, surprisingly dark Sabrina reboot. The first part, which dropped late last year, saw the young Sabrina navigate the human and supernatural worlds, as she flirted with boys, sought to get her witchy powers under control, and generally evolved into a style icon.
The second part, by contrast, seems considerably more bonkers — the trailer ends with a reveal of Satan himself, which is what we tend to describe in the industry as a “bold fucking move”. Oh, and given this is Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, Satan is, of course, unnervingly hot. What more would anyone expect?

Unicorn Store
If you’re still very tied up emotionally in Captain Marvel, then watching the Unicorn Store trailer might give you a bit of tonal whiplash. After all, the Netflix-distributed film, Larson’s first as a director, is as different from her Marvel blockbuster as it is possible to imagine, a kooky, Wes Anderson-lite tale about the inexorable pull of growing up.
It looks very, very odd, and in a distinctly Hallmark card way. That’s Samuel L. Jackson in the trailer, sporting a wig and rambling about unicorns, and Larson, playing a twee art school student, is pulling a wide-eyed, twinkly look that feels distinctly unusual for her. But hey, whether it’s entirely successful or not, it sure looks, uh, distinct.

You Vs. Wild
Following on from the success of Bandersnatch, the multiple choice Black Mirror episode, Netflix are returning to drink from the interactive well, and this time they’re bringing along their mate Bear Grylls with them. You Vs. Wild, as the title suggests, promises to put you in the action, letting you guide the storied adventurer through a series of obstacles and survivalist challenges.
But to be honest, we all know there’s only one challenge that You Vs. Wild better contain, and if it doesn’t, we burn this place to the motherfucking ground.

Killing Ground
Upon its release in 2017, Killing Ground was largely ignored by Australia’s notoriously wussy critical establishment who found the cruel little horror picture — a backwoods, stripped-down exercise in tension that gradually devolves into a series of bloody encounters — too mean-spirited for its own good.
They were wrong, of course, as they have a distinct tendency to be. Killing Ground is one of the most original and challenging Australian genre pictures released in years, a time-warping, twist-filled piece of extreme art that begs a second watch — albeit through your fingers.

When you can watch it: April 20.
Veep
April might be the month that Game of Thrones marches towards its ignoble end, but it’s also the farewell month for another piece of era defining television — Veep.
The political comedy, created and creatively guided by Armando Iannucci, managed to be one of the few pieces of genuinely fascinating contemporary satire that made it through the Trump age without jumping the shark: resisting the urge to comment on the outlandish exploits of the real-life President, Veep instead stayed in its hermetically sealed universe. It was all the stronger for it.
