Melbourne movie lovers will get the chance to see Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon A Time In Hollywood almost two full weeks before the rest of the country, with the film to have its Australian premiere at this year’s Melbourne International Film Festival (MIFF).

The hotly anticipated picture, which stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt and Margot Robbie, will screen on the opening Saturday of the festival on 35mm at Melbourne’s historic Astor Theatre.

It’s the crown jewel of a bumper program that includes 259 feature films, 123 shorts and more than 30 world premieres.

Also at The Astor: an all-night marathon dedicated to the inimitable Jeff Goldblum, with titles including The Fly, Thor: Ragnarok, Independence Day and Earth Girls Are Easy.

Other special events include the world premiere of Little Monsters, an Australian zombie rom-com starring Lupita Nyong’o that will serve as the festival’s centrepiece gala; a performance by Nick Cave, Warren Ellis and the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra of some of Cave and Ellis’ most memorable film scores; and a screening of Céline Sciamma’s acclaimed French coming-of-age drama Girlhood featuring a live, original score by Sampa The Great.

Sciamma’s new film, Portrait of a Lady on Fire, will also screen at MIFF, having recently taken home the Queer Palm at this year’s Cannes Film Festival. It’s one of a number of Cannes titles on the line-up, alongside the likes of Jim Jarmusch’s The Dead Don’t Die, Pedro Almodovar’s Pain and Glory, Xavier Dolan’s Matthias & Maxine and Ladj Ly’s modern-day (non-musical) adaptation of Les Miserables.

Australian films on the program include The Nightingale, Jennifer Kent’s controversial follow-up to The Babadook; Sophie Hyde’s Animals starring Arrested Development star Alia Shawkat; and Kim Farrant’s Melbourne-set thriller Angel of Mine.

Stan Grant’s Adam Goodes documentary The Australian Dream was previously announced as the opening night film, while the festivities will wrap-up with Sundance hit The Farewell starring Awkwafina.

The 2019 Melbourne International Film Festival runs from August 1-18. For the full program and to book tickets, go here.
