In an effort to not, “restrict business activity, jobs or economic activity,” NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian has announced that wearing a mask is mandatory indoors in the greater Sydney area, subject to fines up to $200.

New measures were announced for greater Sydney which includes Wollongong, the Central Coast and the Blue Mountains. Face masks are now mandatory indoors at shopping centres, travelling on public and shared transport (including Uber and taxis), inside cinemas and theatres, attending places of worship, and in hair and beauty businesses.

Face masks are also now mandatory for staff in hospitality, casinos and for patrons using gaming services.

The southern zone of the Northern Beaches will now also be subject to the same restrictions as Greater Sydney. Compliance with these new mandatory regulations will start from Monday the 4th of January.

People will be subject to an on-the-spot fine $200 if they are not wearing a mask in any of the above areas. Meanwhile, outdoor gatherings are also now reduced to 2,000 people unless an exemption is granted. One has been granted for the Sydney cricket test.

“We appreciate what people might say about us continuing to hold those events, but also consider the thousands of jobs it keeps, consider the sense of normality it gives us,” Berejiklian said.

Other rules announced for the greater Sydney area include: Weddings and funerals are now limited to 1 person per 4sqm, and up to a maximum of 100 people. Also, outdoor performances and protests will be limited to 500 people. Night clubs are also not permitted.

These measures do not apply to those living outside of Sydney, the Central Coast, or Wollongong. But all residents and visitors across the State are urged to practise COVID safe behaviours and get tested even if symptoms are mild.

Residents and visitors to NSW are encouraged to regularly check and remain up to date on NSW’s Covid-19 news via the NSW government website here.

Please, be safe and comply with mandatory mask-wearing and restrictions, if not to keep people safe, it could save you $200.
