Honestly, if Magda Szubanski was actually running for Parliament, I’d strongly consider giving her my vote. But I guess her insane alter ego Lynne Postlethwaite is the next best thing?

The character, who first appeared on 90s sketch comedy show Big Girls Blouse, has stepped back into the limelight in order to contest the federal election. “I’m a true independent,” she tells The Project, “because I only care about me”.

“The job description fits me perfectly,” she said. “Parliament only sat for six days this year. I mean, I could work it around my work commitments, which are 11am to 2pm two days a week, plus of course I have my pole dancing.”

Asked why she left it so late to announce her candidacy, Postlethwaite replied that it was so people wouldn’t have time to “unearth the bloody trail of social media faux pas”.

“I don’t have any policies,” she admitted. “But I’ll tell you what I do have a lot of: grievances. So stop interrupting me.”

“I am not a climate change denier,” she added. “I’m all for it. I hope it happens. That way by 2020 my unit in Keilor will have water frontage.”
