Machine Gun Kelly Went On ‘The Project’ And Raved About Corey Worthington
He calls the infamous 'A Current Affair' interview one of Australia's finest pieces of content 'ever produced'.
Machine Gun Kelly popped up on The Project last night to talk about his new album Tickets To My Downfall, and spent a lot of the time chatting about how ‘tapped into the universe he felt’ — and Corey Worthington.
MGK, real name Colson Baker, chatted to Tommy Little via Zoom about his newest album, which marks a pivot into pop-punk from rap, and was produced by Blink-182’s Travis Barker.
When asked about how he was feeling after a stratospheric year, having gained mainstream attention for his Paramore and Rihanna covers (not to mention that he’s now dating Megan Fox, which saw new tabloid coverage) earlier this year, Baker was rapt.
“I’m enjoying looking up to the stars and knowing they’re aligning,” he says, while noting the year has been globally incredibly unstable.
He then pivots, because why not, into talking about Corey Worthington, infamous for throwing a raucous party as a 16-year-old while his parents were away. The public MySpace event blew up, and more than 500 people are believed to have attended the party in quiet outer Melbourne suburb Narre Warren, prompting police to shut it down.
Then Worthington went on A Current Affair wearing a fur hoodie, no shirt and sunglasses he refused to take off. Legendary dickhead behaviour which he leveraged for more than 15 minutes of fame, appearing as a ‘special guest’ on Big Brother in 2008 and appearing in a tongue-in-cheek Red Balloon ad in 2015.
“But as far as what I’m enjoying from Australian content, it’s still the homie with the glasses on that was like, 16 years old and threw the party at his parents house that the neighbours hated,” Baker says. “Still to this day, one of my favourite YouTube clips and content that Australia has produced.”
“You guys are so much more than that, however that is a great, great piece of content,” he added. “We don’t know it yet but he low key is like, an Australian historical figure, dude!”
You heard it here first. Perhaps the two can collaborate: back in 2008, Worthington released a cover of The Beastie Boys’ ‘You Gotta Fight For Your Right (To Party)’.
Worthington, for the record, most recently appeared on Australian Ninja Warrior in 2018, but doesn’t have much of a public presence beyond his Instagram.
