We all know women’s achievements deserve to be shouted from the rooftops, and now the National Gallery of Australia is doing one better. It’s launched the Know My Name National Art Event, a massive outdoor art event to celebrate female Australian artists.

For the next six weeks, the National Gallery of Australia will be taking over hundreds of billboards, bus shelters, and shopping centres around the country to exhibit artworks by women.

The event will celebrate the diversity and creativity of 45 Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander and non-Indigenous female artists. There’ll be more than 70 artworks on display in unmissable public places around the country, including contemporary pieces and artworks dating back to the 1920s.

Over the next six weeks, pieces by artists like Dorrit Black, Grace Cossington Smith, Melinda Harper, Patricia Piccinini, Margaret Preston, Sally Smart and Judy Watson will be shown all over metro and rural Australia for all to see.

“Recognising and celebrating the work of women artists is the first step in addressing inequality and we hope that as many people as possible see their art, hear their stories and know their names,” said artist and National Gallery Council member Sally Smart.

Know My Name is an initiative of the National Gallery of Australia presented in partnership with the Australian Broadcasting Commission, oOh!media, Wikimedia Australia, and cultural partners The Countess Report, Australia Council for the Arts, the Australian Ballet, Sydney Opera House and National Museum of Women in the Arts, Washington D.C.
