“You Question Your Identity So Much”: KLP On Motherhood, Artistry And Activism

There’s an old saying in the music industry — those at the top have an obligation to send the elevator back down. And few musicians embody that as much as dance veteran KLP.

The former host of triple j’s House Party program, KLP — real name Kristy Lee Peters — has spent the last seven years honing a unique and impressive discography, while also supporting the musicians around her.

Key to that support is Ricochet, the collective that she founded and runs that provides mentorship for Australian female musicians.

“A few years ago, I was having lots of different artists — in particular female artists — come chat to me,” Peters said in an interview with Music Junkee, as part of The Artist Alphabet, a video series that challenges musicians to share their most surprising stories. “And I would constantly get asked in interviews what it was like being a female in the industry. And I was kinda over talking about it, and I wanted to do something and be part of a solution, or create my own solution.

“It can seem so overwhelming sometimes to look at the bigger picture. You can just be like, ‘I can’t change all that.’ But I realised that you can change the little things in your reach. So I decided to just start, baby steps — and so I created Ricochet.”

In the same interview, Peters also discussed her experiences of motherhood and pregnancy.

“Being a mum in the music industry is the same as being a mum in any industry, I think. It’s really scary, you question your identity so much. And you want to give up your identity a little bit, because you’re always looking to put their needs before you.”
