Because I am barely ever paying attention to almost anything that is happening around me, I do not remember a lot of things.

My brain is as porous as a sieve, the past is a foreign country to me. Last year, at a family gathering, I tried to reintroduce myself to a cousin who I have known since birth.

But, despite struggling to remember my partner’s birthday, my own age, my address, or even the colour of my own eyes (blue, I think), I can tell you exactly where I was when I discovered that Natalie Imbruglia’s ‘Torn’ is a cover.

That’s right: ‘Torn’ was first penned by a trio of songwriters performing under the name ‘Ednaswap‘. Of course, it doesn’t really matter who authored a song. Imbruglia owns ‘Torn’, and belts out that chorus with such force and honesty that every second of it belongs to her.

But still, there’s a reason why the discovery of that song’s authorship is so shocking to so many people. Well, it’s time to gird your loins again, ’cause white Australia is just discovering that Holly Valance didn’t write her breakout hit ‘Kiss Kiss’ either.

Yep, your entire ‘Kiss Kiss’-stuffed life has been a lie, as was pointed out on Twitter by writer Albert Santos.

Sure, the Aussie popsmith might be the one who powered the song to fame in 2002, but hers is the third take on a song first called ‘Şımarık’ and penned by Turkish balladeer Tarkan.

Moreover, Valance wasn’t even the first artist to sing the track in English:

For the curious, here’s the extremely banging original:

Anyway, despite how confounding this all is, still a good opportunity to feast your ears on the Valance version, banger that it is:
