This morning, Kira Puru popped by triple j for a cracker ‘Like A Version’ performance, and folks, it might be our favourite of the year.

The Newcastle native led a five-piece for the massive cover of Katy Perry’s Teenage Dream hit ‘Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F)’ — you know, the one where Rebecca Black features prominently in the music video? Ah, 2010.

Thankfully, Puru’s gave it an update, transforming the Dr. Luke-produced track into a groove-heavy, disco-leaning jam. While Puru’s band do a bang-up job (and check out Joji Malani of Gang Of Youths providing a sleek bass line), it’s all about that voice.

Where Perry keeps things simple, Puru adds grunt and spark to every line, showing off her ability to control her voice while pushing it hard. It’s kind of what a perfect Friday night actually feels like — huge, fun, and feeling utterly in command.

Puru also offered up a live version of party starter ‘Molotov’, which is off her upcoming self-titled EP. As you can tell by her cover, the new music’s leaning into Puru’s love of pop — and by what we’ve heard, we’re all for it.

That’s coming out September 20, but for now, you can kick things off by listening to both songs below.
