Aussie Battlers Kath And Kim Reunited, Briefly Making 2018 Enjoyable
Given that so many of our displays of national pride turn into gross and racist displays of violence, it’s always nice when something typically ‘Strayan happens that doesn’t make you want to hide under the covers and never, ever emerge again. So, forgive us for getting downright choked up at the surprise, long-overdue reappearance of Kath and Kim, a pair of true blue Aussie comedy icons that bless their hearts, aren’t some duffer dressed in blackface or a transphobic old fart.
Kath and Kim (AKA Jane Turner and Gina Riley) made the appearance at this year’s AACTA awards held in Sydney on Wednesday. Needless to say, they were dressed to the nines, sporting – with their customary taste – a red jumpsuit and a g-string respectively.
And the banter, as it was always going to, flowed beautifully, with the pair chatting about everything from fitspo to their excellent taste in aesthetics.
Look at how nice they look! How different! How unusual!
Better still, the pair were there to hand out the award for Best Performance In A Television Comedy, which went to contemporary comedic queen Hannah Gadsby. Isn’t it lovely when old classics meet new ones?
Of course, Kath and Kim sadly haven’t been seen together on our screens since 2012, when they starred in what could probably be best described as the ill-advised feature-length “comedy” caper, Kath & Kimderella.
But, and forgive us for going out on a limb and speculating here, could their appearance at the AACTAs be a test-run for a roaring return? 2018 was after all the year that gave us the long-awaited return of Russell Coight, another Australian comedy legend who had been away from our screens for far too long. Is it time for Kath and Kim to follow suit?
In the interim, check out the pair at the AACTAs here, and dream of a day that the pair return once more into our homes.
