This Aussie Musician Scammed His Way Into Kanye West’s Exclusive Coachella Sunday Service
"Pretty glad I bought that expensive ass merch bahahaha."
While we don’t condone scamming your way into music festivals, it’s hard to deny the genius of some methods — remember when punters snuck into Splendour via a wheelie bin last year? Well, Australian musician Grey Ghost might’ve one-upped them with a simple but very effective way to sneak into Kanye West’s invite-only Sunday Service at Coachella.
Over on Instagram (via Tone Deaf), the musician shared his story, calling it the ‘craziest and most hilarious day’ of his life. The event did have one-off merch readily available and a couple spots for punters, and so Ghost — real name Jeremy Kohen — woke up bright and early at 5.30am to head down, buying the (quite expensive) long sleeve and pants.
Towards the end of the two-hour set, which reimagined West’s discography as spirituals, Kohen realised security were pushing back punters and “everyone except the band/choir whose outfits were all pretty much the same as the merch I bought.” So he did some quick thinking.
“I put that shit on quick smart and literally danced into the backstage area with the choir as if I was part of the show,” he said.
It paid off — he ended up meeting Donald Glover, and rubbed shoulders with West, the Kardashians and Chance the Rapper, but didn’t overstay his welcome.
“I hung out,” he writes, “got photos as if I was part of the choir, poured myself a champagne, grabbed a bagel and peaced the fuck out.”
We salute you, Grey Ghost. It certainly sounds a lot better than the live YouTube stream, which was filmed via a pinhole camera. Check out Kohen’s footage and pics below, in the original Instagram post.
