Justin Bieber has announced he’s on hiatus from his music career, in an answer to fans pleading for a new album.

The 25-year-old has popped up with features on songs by the likes of DJ Khaled, David Guetta and Luis Fonsi in the past two years, but hasn’t released an album since 2015’s Purpose. Via Instagram, Bieber today announced that he was taking a step back from music for a while to focus on “repairing some of the deep-rooted issues that I have as much of us have”.

Last year, his longterm manager Scooter Braun told The Guardian he feared Bieber was on the brink of death during 2013-’14.

“I was not going to give up on him, I was not going to let him die,” he said. “I was not going to put him in that position of: ‘Oh, let’s just keep him working.’”

The lead-up to Purpose was tumultuous, as the pop-star dominated tabloids through a series of odd public behaviour and potential criminal charges (relating to assault, vandalism and careless driving). But since 2014, Bieber’s largely rehabilitated his image through the critically-acclaimed Purpose, as well as becoming a born again Christian and marrying Hailey Baldwin last year.

In his statement, he says that touring and music made him quite unhappy, and he wanted to focus on his health first.

“So I read a lot of messages saying you want an album,” he wrote. “I’ve toured my whole teenage life, and early 20s, I realised and as you guys probably saw I was unhappy last tour and I don’t deserve that and you don’t deserve that, you pay money to come and have a lively energetic fun light concert and I was unable emotionally to give you that near the end of the tour.”

“I am now very focused on repairing some of the deep rooted issues that I have as most of us have, so that I don’t fall apart, so that I can sustain my marriage and be the father I want to be.”

Bieber and Baldwin do not currently have children, so he’s talking in the long-term. He promises fans he’ll return to music, as it’s his passion.

“Music is very important to me but Nothing comes before my family and my health,” he writes. “I will come with a kick ass album ASAP, my swag is undeniable and my drive is indescribable his love is supernatural his grace is that reliable…”

So I read a lot of messages saying you want an album .. I’ve toured my whole teenage life, and early 20s, I realized and as you guys probably saw I was unhappy last tour and I don’t deserve that and you don’t deserve that, you pay money to come and have a lively energetic fun light concert and I was unable emotionally to give you that near the end of the tour. I have been looking, seeking, trial and error as most of us do, I am now very focused on repairing some of the deep rooted issues that I have as most of us have, so that I don’t fall apart, so that I can sustain my marriage and be the father I want to be. Music is very important to me but Nothing comes before my family and my health. I will come with a kick ass album ASAP, my swag is undeniable and my drive is indescribable his love is supernatural his grace is that reliable…. the top is where I reside period whether I make music or not the king said so. 👑 but I will come with a vengeance believe that..
