Sorry for the clickbait, it was just a very funny headline — it’s Julie Andrews! Julie Andrews plays an extremely terrifying magical giant crab in Aquaman. Cool!

Entertainment Weekly has reported that Dame Julie Andrews, most famous for her role in The Sound of Music and Mary Poppins has a secret role as the voice of the mythic Karathen, an undersea creature that is somehow involved in Jason Momoa’s quest to unite the Atlantean and surface worlds.

Aquaman is a film about an undersea man who loves to punch. Some people find it an odd choice that dignified legend of cinema, Julie Andrews, would join the cast as a giant angry lobster, but is that really super different from a magical child-care professional who uses an umbrella to fly?

“We wanted the Karathen to have the voice of a classic British actress, albeit somewhat digitally altered,” explained Aquaman producer Peter Safran to Entertainment Weekly. “And when we found out Julie was interested and available and excited to do it, casting her was a no-brainer.”

It’s also vaguely ironic casting because Aquaman will be competing at the box-office against Disney’s Mary Poppins Returns —  the sequel to Julie Andrews’ 1964 classic. Who will win? Evil-Crustacean Julie Andrews or Rebooted Julie Andrews?

Aquaman has got a pretty stacked cast already: Jason Momoa as the titular aquatic man, Amber Heard, Nicole Kidman as the actual queen of the ocean, Willem Dafoe as some kind of damp creep — I actually think Julie Andrews makes perfect sense in context.

Anyway, people are pretty excited about the casting news:

Aquaman hits cinemas in Australia on Boxing Day.
