“He’s A Huge F*cking Asshole”: John Oliver Didn’t Hold Back On Fraser Anning
Where is the lie?
Australian senator Fraser Anning’s comments surrounding the Christchurch mosque shootings are so appalling that they’ve generated denouncements across the world — and, as he does, John Oliver has now joined in.
On last night’s Last Week Tonight, Oliver spent the opening section of the show running through the terrorist attack that claimed the lives of 50 Muslims this past Friday, calling it a “total affront to the basic values of the people of New Zealand”.
After showing a clip of Jacinda Arden making a statement, he says that New Zealand “is showing its strength in how it’s been responding to this tragedy”, even though “there is honestly nothing I like more than making fun of New Zealand”.
“The same,” he says, “sadly, cannot be said for Australia’s Fraser Anning — a hard-line racist politician and melted candle of Ed Harris.”
Anning, if you’re lucky enough to not know, attempted to blame Muslim immigration for the massacre, first via Tweet, then press statement, then conference — where he was egged. Over the past three days, he has limply expressed remorse then blamed the dead for their own murders.
Oliver read a section of the statement, which said that, “The real cause of bloodshed on New Zealand streets today is the immigration program which allowed Muslim fanatics to migrate to New Zealand in the first place… Muslims may have been the victims today, usually they are the perpetrators.”
It is abhorrent, unacceptable, and completely inaccurate — currently, Change.org have their biggest petition ever to remove Anning from the senate, sitting at 1.2m signees.
Oliver kept his inditement pretty simple, because not too much needs to be said. After showing a clip of Egg Boy smashing that egg, he chose to not mince words.
“The real cause of Fraser Anning getting hit with an egg is Fraser Anning saying things that prompt people to throw eggs at him,” Oliver said, echoing Anning’s statement. “He may be the victim today, but usually he’s a huge fucking asshole.”
Oliver would know too — back in August, he dug in hard into Anning’s completely cooked “final solution” senate speech, in which he argued for a return to the White Australia Policy. Watch his latest rinse-down below.
