Some subtle shade at James Corden may have been thrown.

Decked out in branded hoodies and bum bags, John Mulaney and Andy Samberg caused chaos on Jimmy Kimmel Live this week.

The two comedians explained they were stepping in for Jimmy Kimmel who had contracted COVID for the second time in three weeks. “We’re thinking they should probably change the name of the show to Jimmy Kimmel: Alive.” Wow, okay. Too soon, probably!

The two also explained why they were encased in Jimmy Kimmel swag — because of the pandemic, they no longer fit into their suits. Other memorable lines from Mulaney include, “it’s an honour and favour to be here”, “only on this show could you get bumped from guest to host”, and “that’s show business, one day you don’t have to do anything, then you get a text and you have to do something”. True.

The duo gave big ‘eating milo straight out of the tin’ energy, and seemed to enjoy each other’s presence without fully being aware of what was going on. They also seemed to have a go at James Corden announcing his retirement last month.

“We’ve had a lot of fun, hosting this show over the last few minutes, ” Mulaney said solemnly towards the end of the monologue. “But we’ve given it some serious thought. And it’s with a heavy heart that we’d like to announce our retirement from Late Night Television.”

“Well, we didn’t want Corden to get all the action,” Samberg shot back. Oh, and Samberg regaled us with tales of being horny for the wax figures at Madame Tussauds, as one does.
