If one thing has become clear over the last half decade or so, it’s that capitalism helps the rich get richer and the poor get poorer. Just look at the case of Jeff Bezos of Amazon.

The wealth divide between the haves and the have-nots is greater now than at any other point in history — including in the age of kings and queens. Marie Antoinette isn’t some far-off, distant figure from our mythic past. Bezos is Marie Antoinette on overdrive, with a personal fortune that will soon overtake the total wealth of some small countries.

And it’s the coronavirus pandemic that will help the Amazon magnate get there.

See, since the pandemic forced us all inside, people have been relying more than ever on Bezos’ giant online shopping boutique. While industries around the world are shuttering and struggling, Amazon is having to hire more workers to keep up with demand. According to projections, that boom will further consolidate Bezos’ wealth, with most predicting him to reach trillionaire status in just under a decade. He’d be the first person in history to broach that particular milestone.

And that’s a milestone that should never be broached. How can we live in a planet where millions starve while one man has more wealth than he could ever hope to spend in his life? Jeff Bezos shouldn’t be hoarding that wealth. It should be in the hands of the people who are actually creating his products, and selling them, and doing the work that he sits back and profits off.

It’s that inequality that has lit the internet up, with hundreds of thousands of Twitter users criticising Bezos and the broken system that gives him the power of an ancient king.

Some people, meanwhile, put it more simply:

Bezos’ wealth spike comes at the same time that entire industries are being shuttered and unemployment is rising. How can we sit back and let that happen?
