Jamie Lee Curtis, eternal scream queen and all-around icon, has given a deeply moving interview to People magazine about her daughter Ruby coming out as a transgender woman.

In the piece, which also features extensive quotes from Ruby herself, Curtis explains the sheer joy she has experienced throughout the journey with her daughter.

“It’s speaking a new language,” said Curtis. “It’s learning new terminology and words. I am new at it. I am not someone who is pretending to know much about it. And I’m going to blow it, I’m going to make mistakes. I would like to try to avoid making big mistakes.

“You slow your speech down a little. You become a little more mindful about what you’re saying. How you’re saying it. You still mess up, I’ve messed up today twice. We’re human.”

Nonetheless, despite these ‘mistakes’, Curtis has emphasised the ways in which she feels Ruby’s journey can be an opportunity for other people to learn more about themselves, and their relationship to gender.

“If one person reads this, sees a picture of Ruby and me and says, ‘I feel free to say this is who I am,’ then it’s worth it,” explained Curtis.

As for Ruby, she has explained the deep acceptance she has felt from her mother, a nurturing side of Curtis that has defined her life.

“It was scary — just the sheer fact of telling them something about me they didn’t know,” Ruby explained in the opening of the article. “It was intimidating — but I wasn’t worried. They had been so accepting of me my entire life.”

There you go: a little bit of teary, heartbreaking joy for your day.
