Word has it that TV host James Corden is finishing up his run at The Late Late Show.

He’s said to have extended his contract with CBS’ late night talk show for one year, and will skulk off during the first half of next year.

“It’s been it’s a really hard decision to leave because I’m so immensely proud of the show. I’m thrilled to be extending [for a year],” Corden said, per Deadline. “I always thought I’d do it for five years and then leave and then I stayed on. I’ve really been thinking about it for a long time, thinking whether there might be one more adventure.”

Corden was apparently offered a variety of deals by CBS bosses that included a three-year extension. “My bosses here at CBS have been incredibly supportive and extraordinarily patient with me while I made this decision,” he said.

Cordon has, should we say, a bit of a reputation. About a year ago, he delivered a segment on The Late Late Show known as ‘Spill Your Guts’ that depicted an orientalist rendering of East Asian food, stirring up racism against Asians and Asian-Americans at a time when racism against those communities was already on the up. The segment stopped featuring Asian food after a petition amassed more than 45,000 signatures.

Much to the chagrin of musical fans, the apparently mediocre singer has also snuck his way into a bunch of musicals, including Into The Woods, Cats, The Prom, and Cinderella, the last of which meant that he — at one point — ended up doing some air thrusting towards perplexed commuters at an LA pedestrian crossing (while dressed in a rat costume, of course). All those musical appearances meant that yet another petition was signed to ensure that Corden as far away from the movie adaptation of Wicked as possible.

By the time Corden leaves the show, he’ll have been hosting for eight in a half years. It’s unclear what he’ll do next, but for now, let’s enjoy the fact that whatever Carpool Karaoke was will finally be consigned to the dustbin of history.
