People Are Taking The Piss Out Of The New iPhone 12 Because It Looks Exactly Like The iPhone 5

Apple really just threw a fancy camera on an iPhone 5 and thought we wouldn't notice.

Early this morning, Apple finally unveiled their long-awaited iPhone 12 model.

While the annual Apple event is normally held in September, the announcement for the latest iPhone had to be pushed back to October due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

During the virtual event, along with the unveiling of the HomePod Mini, Apple CEO Tim Cook shared images of the four new iPhones that will be available in 2020 — with the the iPhone 12 and 12 Pro being available from October 23, and the 12 Pro Max and the 12 Mini from November 13.

While all varying in size, each iPhone 12 comes equipped with 5G connectivity, an A14 bionic chip, and claims that they would be the “toughest” and “brightest” iPhones yet thanks to new ‘Ceramic Shield’ technology.

However, Apple also shared that these new phones would not be sold with a wall charger or headphones, and instead just come with a USB-C to lightning cable in an effort to “reduce carbon emissions” in both the shipping and production of the iPhone.

But despite this big change in what actually comes in the box with these pricey new iPhone models, people online were stuck on one major change in particular: That the iPhone 12 looked oddly similar to the classic iPhone 5.

Armed with a new square shape — a big design shift from the curved styles of the iPhone 6 to 11 –, people noticed that the iPhone 12 looked exactly like 2012’s iPhone 5, just with a fancier camera.

Considering Apple decided to completely ditch the normally included earphones and a charging block, and then also revert back to an almost decade-old design, it’s shocking to see that the iPhone 12 prices can go up to a hefty $2,369 for a Pro Max at the largest storage size.

So to cope with the pain that is Apple’s pricing, everyone has since decided to turn the iPhone 12 into a meme to mock the company blatantly copying themselves. Seriously, the resemblance was so uncanny that even after the Apple event, “iPhone 5” trended above the “iPhone 12”.

Really though, beyond the massive design jump from the iPhone 8 to the buttonless X, new iPhones rarely really give us anything new anyway. Plus, we’re probably all going to buy one eventually because that’s just how we are as people.

The iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro will be available in Australia from October 23, and from November 13 for the iPhone 12 Pro Max and the iPhone 12 Mini.
