It may or may not involve time travel.

Warning: the following story contains spoilers for The Fate of the Furious, so if you’re one of the six people on the planet who hasn’t seen it yet then please look away now. Also, what are you doing with your life?

Shame on you.

As everyone who has seen The Fate of the Furious can attest, one of the best things about it is the bromantic dynamic between Agent Hobbs and Deckard Shaw, played by Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham, respectively. Admittedly, it wasn’t quite as good as the dynamic between Shaw and baby Brian, but then again that’s a pretty high bar.

In light of the film’s stupendous financial success, Deadline is now reporting that Hobbs and Shaw could be getting their very own buddy movie. According to the publication, “franchise architects” including chief writer Chris Morgan are considering a spinoff that would see the one-time adversaries form “an unlikely alliance”.

Not only could this happen, but the film could go into production ahead of Fast and Furious 9.

But what should the spinoff be about? Obviously there are a few things that need to be addressed, including the whereabouts of Cipher and her bleach blonde dreads, and the fact that Shaw straight up murdered Han at the end of Furious 6. For a franchise that is all about the importance of family, it seems like the crew let him off way, way too easy.

In interviews this week, Morgan has confirmed that he will deliver #JusticeForHan sooner rather than later.

RIP.

Then there’s the suggestion that, like all long-running film franchises, the Fast and Furious series must eventually end up in space. Morgan recently refused to rule out the idea, and has even floated the possibility of Dom teaming up with his long lost brother Riddick.

The fact that Morgan is willing to embrace sci-fi concepts opens up all kinds of possibilities. Could the next member of The Family™ be a robot? I don’t see any reason why not!

But if Morgan really wants to kick the Fast saga up a gear, I think it’s abundantly clear where he needs to take things next. I’m talking, of course, about time travel.

Woah indeed.

Here’s my pitch: What if Mr. Nobody were to discover that Cipher has escaped into the past? Obviously Dom can’t go get her, since he’s got a kid to look after. So naturally, the job would fall to Hobbs and Shaw. They could journey back and capture Cipher, while also stopping by Tokyo to prevent the pre-Fate of the Furious version of Shaw from ever killing Han in the first place.

An alternate timeline could also explain how the music of Ludacris exists in the same universe as Tej Parker.

The only question that remains is how would Hobbs and Shaw travel back in time?

I am now a successful Hollywood screenwriter, please direct all interview requests to my agent.
