Harvey Norman Store Slammed For Dodgy Coronavirus Sign
Hardly normal.
A Harvey Norman store in regional NSW has been heavily criticised for a sign linking the coronavirus to products made outside Australia.
The sign, which was spotted and posted to social media, reads “No coronavirus in our mattresses, as ours are Australian made!”

Besides the obvious, it was pointed out the sign is wrong in MANY ways, as there are no recorded cases of anyone catching coronavirus from something like a mattress. There was also people wondering how likely it is that there are no other products from China sold by Harvey Norman.
there’s people with CoronaVirus here too @HarveyNormanAU .. what if someone infected walked in and tested out ya mattresses.. Idiots https://t.co/iafmaVBLk4

Until that time I tried to buy a timber bed from Harvey Norman, there was to be a 6 week wait til it came from Asia

Many other people strongly criticised the company, labelling the sign as straight-up racist, and calling for a boycott of the store.
australia: this is a great time to show that we aren’t racist
harvey norman: no https://t.co/JWRFtVHSkL

On this, if you cannot see why the Harvey Norman sign is racist I am really sorry to break it to you but, you're a fucking racist. https://t.co/a08rR6aLts

Harvey Norman’s head office quickly moved to distance themselves from the sign, saying in a Tweet that the “franchisee acted in isolation without any consultation or communication beyond their store.”
Statement in relation to signage @ HN Albury. Albury franchisee acted in isolation without any consultation or communication beyond their store. As soon as the company was made aware, the sign was immediately removed and the franchisee told this was unacceptable. Our apologies.

An apology is good, and the sign has been removed, but there’s no news about if further disciplinary action or training will be taken. If the culture of the store that lead to that sign being written is still intact with no interference, that is concerning. There’s also speculation that the culture of the entire company from the top down may mean nothing will change.
I’d already been avoiding Harvey Norman stores because the company’s Executive Chairman sets such a terrible example of corporate bad behaviour. I know this racist sign is only one franchisee, but it does seem very on brand with the ‘values’ Mr Harvey regularly portrays. https://t.co/HDaHmDZK7i

How surprising to find @HarveyNormanAU at the epicentre of a racist shitstorm https://t.co/6Pw9v9udcm

It’s just the latest in a spike of coronavirus-related racist memes and increased hostility toward Chinese people in Australia, and let’s hope it keeps getting called out.
