“It’s A Stain On My Life”: Grimes Really Hates Her Last Record ‘Art Angels’

The promotional cycle for the new, climate change-focused record from the artist formerly known as Grimes, Miss Anthropocene, is really starting to warm up (pun very much intended).
But because this is Grimes, AKA Claire Boucher, AKA ‘c’, nothing about the promotional cycle has been simple. Rumours have continued to swirl around Boucher’s technocrat, anti-union boyfriend, Elon Musk; she’s talked about wanting to kill her old moniker via “public execution”; and she’s described her new record as being about how climate change can be a fun thing, actually, which is probably the attitude that comes with dating someone who could buy you a new planet if this one gets fucked up.
Now, in a new interview with Cultured magazine, Boucher has explained more about the forthcoming project. The biggest takeaway from the chat is that it’s “in flux”, apparently — Miss Anthropocene is an amalgamation of three albums that Grimes has been recording over the last few years, and it’s still getting tinkered with. As a result, it doesn’t sound like we’re getting the record very soon.
The interview is also notable for containing a Grimes on Grimes diss. Boucher reckons that Art Angels, her last record, “was a piece of crap.” She feels like it would have been better if released “in a vacuum” and that too many people tried to make it into something that it wasn’t.
Oh, and in case all of that wasn’t salacious enough for you, Boucher also had something to say about ejaculation. Apparently one of the new songs on the record, ‘So Heavy I Fell Through The Earth’, is about exactly that. “Specifically [it’s about] how when a dude comes inside you, you become in their thrall,” Boucher explained. “It’s an attack on your feminist freedom.”
So there you have it — new record, same old Grimes. Oh, and in case you think you have the final word on her, just know that she reckons there’s no such thing as a final word at all.
“The reality of the situation is there is no reality,” Boucher said. “Everybody thinks there’s an objective truth. The thing is that everybody’s right and everybody’s wrong,”
