It’s been over three years since Gang Of Youths released their critically acclaimed, award-winning second album Go Farther In Lightnessand, to put it lightly, fans have been rather keen to hear the follow-up.

The band previously said it would “definitely” be out in 2020, with frontman and songwriter Dave Le’aupepe telling Jeremy Dylan’s My Favourite Album podcast back in February that he was deep in writing for the album after dealing with writers block.

“It’s hard to be able to bridge the old us, or the old stuff, I guess, and what it is we’re sort of turning into,” Le’aupepe said, as reported by GOY’s unofficial fan website Deepest Sighs. “Trying to find the voice again is really hard — I’ve had writer’s block for about three years again. So that’s been really tricky to navigate, especially because the last album did well and that’s a lot of expectation that I put on myself to do better than that — it always has to be better or different.

“So it’s hard because there’s a tension between wanting to marry the things that I liked and what people who enjoy Gang of Youths’ music liked about what we do — but also trying to carve something new and forge something ahead.”

Now, it certainly looks as if the band is gearing up to release new music, having made some significant changes to their online presence in the last few days. Over the weekend they changed their social profile pictures to a new press shot featuring new member Tom Hobden, who has filled the space left by Joji Malani. Hobden had previously been a touring member of Mumford & Sons.

Eagle-eyed fans over at the Gang of Youths Appreciation Gang Facebook page also noticed the band has slung up some new merch on their website — available for pre-order only at this stage.

According to their Instagram, the band has been hard at work in the studio, with clips of Le’aupepe hunched over a computer mixing and Max Dunn noodling on a guitar.

Of course, there hasn’t been any official word on when a new single or album is heading our way, but we reckon something is on its way very, very soon. As political pundits like to say every time the PM fucks up: It is ON.

While you wait for new music to drop, have a read over our Headliner profile with Dave Le’aupepe here.
