"Elon Musk hosting 'SNL' is huge for guys still making 'that's what she said' jokes who think they'd be great at hosting 'SNL'."

If you didn’t think Saturday Night Live couldn’t possibly stoop lower than having Donald Trump host the show in 2015, you’d be wrong. That’s because literal billionaire Elon Musk is set to host the show on May 8.

No, you’re not reading that wrong. Alongside Miley Cyrus as the night’s performer, both the official SNL account, Cyrus and Elon Musk himself took to Twitter to confirm the awful hosting gig over the weekend.

“Let’s find out just how live Saturday Night Live really is,” Musk tweeted alongside the smirking devil emoji, like some horny teen boy trying to flirt.

Now there’s obviously a whole lot wrong with this decision.

Firstly, why the fuck is a CEO, let alone a billionaire hosting Saturday Night Live, a show that is usually hosted by a notable actor, comedian, athlete or artist? Secondly, Elon Musk is problematic. He peddled COVID-19 misinformation throughout the pandemic and quite literally said the “coronavirus panic is dumb” when spikes in cases really started kicking off in March 2020.

Beyond that, the Tesla CEO has never given any indication that he can even act, let alone memorise the multiple skit scripts needed for the episode. And finally, Elon Musk isn’t funny. Like at all. I get the vibe that Musk is definitely one of those men who think that lazy jokes about “identifying as a tree trunk” is the peak of comedy.

Basically none of it really any sense beyond a very obvious attempt at a desperate ratings grab by NBC, as we saw happen when Donald Trump hosted in 2015.

And some Saturday Night Live cast members agree, too.

On Instagram, SNL cast member Bowen Yang shared Elon Musk’s tweet and asked “What the fuck does this even mean?” in confusion, and then followed up with a single frowning emoji. Newest writer-turned-featured player Andrew Dismukes echoed the sentiment and shared that the “Only CEO I wanna do sketch with is Cher-E Oteri”.

Less directly, cast favourite Aidy Bryant also fired a subtle shot at Musk by reposting a Bernie Sanders tweet about 50 of America’s wealthiest people owning more than the bottom half of Americans.

“The 50 wealthiest people in America today own more wealth than the bottom half of our people,” the shady tweet read. “Let me repeat that, because it is almost too absurd to believe: The 50 wealthiest people in this country own more wealth than some 165 MILLION Americans. That is a moral obscenity.”

And a result of nothing really making sense and NBC proving that apparently anything goes when it comes to casting, people have now turned Elon Musk’s host announcement into a giant meme.

Sharing other equally terrible host and music pairings with the SNL pinboard format, people have been offering NBC their own awful alternatives that the show could use now there are no more moral rules at play.

At this point why not chuck the Walmart yodelling kid on the show? What’s stopping NBC from getting Jeff Bezos on now? Why aren’t we wrangling up the entire Glee cast? While we’re at it, we might as well give White Boy Summer-founder Chet Hanks double hosting duties.

I know Saturday Night Live is desperate for some better ratings, but Lorne Michaels… are we really this desperate?
