After months of delays, Drake finally released his much-anticipated sixth studio album, Certified Lover Boyon Friday.

But the extended wait clearly didn’t impact Drake’s streaming success with every single track on CLB already taking over the top 23 spots on the Global Apple Music Top 100 chart, following a game of album release cat and mouse with Kanye West’s project, Donda.

However, even though the rapper is currently dominating the charts, a few songs on the album have captured the world’s attention for all the wrong reasons.

One of these tracks is ‘TSU’, where Drake has been slammed for sampling R. Kelly’s ‘Half on a Baby’ and giving the alleged predator a credit on the song. And the other is ‘Girls Want Girls’, which sports some very questionable lyrics where Drake calls himself a lesbian.

In the chorus of ‘Girls Want Girls’, Drake confusingly raps: “Starin’ at your dress ’cause it’s see-through/Yeah, talkin’ all the shit that you done been through/Yeah, say that you a lesbian, girl, me too/Ayy, girls want girls where I’m from.

Almost instantly, people couldn’t quite fathom what they were hearing. Drake calling himself a lesbian was clearly a case of fetishising WLW relationships and sexualising lesbians — something that’s way too common in the music industry.

In fact, queer women shared that the line “I’m a lesbian, too” is a sentence that straight men often use in real life when trying to hit on lesbian women when trying to erase their sexuality. Drake’s “lesbian” admission also added to the already existing ‘BBL Drake’ meme — jokes that claim the rapper had a Brazilian Butt Lift, which turned him into an “Instagram baddie” — that took over the internet earlier this year.

But even though there has been very valid criticism of Drake’s lyrics over the last few days, on TikTok people in the LGBTIQ community have jokingly welcomed Drake into the queer community with open arms.

Celebrating the rapper “coming out” as a he/him lesbian, like his lyrics on ‘Girls Want Girls’ suggest, actual lesbians are congratulating Drake for finally feeling comfortable enough to be his true self. And in some cases, people in the queer community have even offered to peg Drake to make the whole thing official.

So welcome to the LGBTIQ community, Drake. I guess.
