Few have ever failed so spectacularly at something so simple.

For better and for worse, there is no contemporary popstar quite like DJ Khaled.

The man is a walking meme, as well known for his public persona as for his thick, platinum-coated music. He is, after all, the man who once got lost on a jet ski in the middle of nowhere and had to Snapchat his followers to ask for help. He has a kind of bumbling quality to him, a comic obliviousness that resembles the pratfalls of Mr Bean.

Exactly how aware is he of how funny he continues to be? Hard to say. The rapper and producer seems deeply oblivious to irony, and everything he does has the hilarious sheen of authenticity. There’s nothing irony-poisoned about DJ Khaled. He says what he means and he means what he says.

Which, of course, only makes his exploits that much funnier. In a world that has begun to buckle under the weight of conflicting meanings and sarcastic detachment, DJ Khaled is a rare blast of truth-telling, a clown who doesn’t quite understand why everyone around him is laughing.

Case in point: over the weekend, Khaled went viral once again for a short clip in which he tries and fails to play the guitar.

The instrument was a gift from the Bob Marley family, who honoured the man for his longstanding love of the reggae icon. In the video, Khaled gets an assistant to read a loving note from the Marley estate, while he sits there beaming.

And then it happens. Khaled throws the guitar on his lap, and begins to “play” it — if you can call slapping the hell out of a hallowed instrument playing it.

I mean, just watch this short work of art, a deeply strange trip into the mind of one of the biggest, weirdest popstars on the planet.

Like I said: art.
