"An Arthurian knight being played by an Indian actor. Be still my heart."

Starring Dev Patel, The Green Knight was one of the most anticipated films of 2020 and thanks to the pandemic, it’s now one of the most anticipated films of 2021.

Earlier this week, fans were finally treated to a full trailer for the film which stars Dev Patel. Directed by David Lowery and inspired by the Arthurian legend, The Green Knight is on track to be released in the USA in July.

The film’s official synopsis reads: A fantasy adventure based on the Arthurian legend, The Green Knight tells the story of Sir Gawain, King Arthur’s headstrong nephew, who embarks on a quest to confront the eponymous Knight, a gigantic green-skinned stranger.

Dev Patel is Sir Gawain and the trailer provides an array of twisted glimpses into the adventure that awaits him. Apart from teasing a visually stunning feast thanks to cinematographer, Andrew Droz Palermo, the masses cannot stop obsessing over how beautiful and perfect Dev Patel is.

For those who may not be familiar with Arthurian legend, Sir Gawaine and the Green Knight is a chivalric romance tale from the 14th century. The tale sees the headstrong Sir Gawaine challenged to strike a mysterious green knight-like figure in exchange for the figure’s axe. The catch? One year from that day, Gawain must meet the Green Knight at a chapel to receive one blow in return.

In tellings of the folktale, Gawaine makes the strange journey to meet the Green Knight at the chapel but is accosted by strange happenings that include talking animals and shadowy castles ruled by hunt-obsessed lords. It’s also a very horny folktale with a tonne of gay subtext. But I’d prefer not to spoil the 700-year-old poem for those who may want to keep the film’s potential contents a surprise.

In the trailer, we see Gawain’s (Dev Patel) initial meeting with the Green Knight. We also see Dev Patel as Gwaine handsomely prepare to handsomely swashbuckle some disturbing looking monsters. As a fantasy fan who adores Dev Patel, I am very down for both.

The Green Knight is yet to get an Australian release date. Hopefully, it will correspond to the July release in the US.
