Every three years, one shining light comes out of the woodwork of every federal election: the democracy sausage.

There’s nothing more disappointing — bar the election result prospects itself — than rocking up to a barren polling centre when decaffeinated, hungover, or simply hangry, while casting your democratic vote.

But fear not, a bunch of heroes have wrangled together the finest data to map out where all the sausage sizzles will be this year. A website pinpointing where all the democracy sausages can be found has returned stronger than ever after the 2019 election, to help inform and feed Australia’s ravenous voters on Saturday, as more than 17 million people continue to cast their votes.

Democracy Sausage, a group described as being “100 percent non-partisan, organic, hormone free, and grass fed”, have made it super easy to find not only where your nearest polling centre is, but also which schools, churches, town halls, or community centres have committed to the full culinary election experience.

Using an interactive map, voters can search their address and easily see which venues will have a bacon and egg roll, a cake stall, savoury vegetarian options, halal food, coffee, and of course, the BBQ fired up to the max for a democracy sausage. It also shows polling times, accessibility friendliness, where and what the raised funds will go towards, as well as the main entrance points.

Last weekend, 2.5 million postal vote applications were made, and 1.2 million registered people hit the pre-polls in early voting, turning down what the ABC describes as “their chance to snag a democracy sausage on election day”.

This week also saw a kerfuffle over voters who tested positive to COVID and were in isolation, but were not able to apply for postal vote or phone voting. However, it is expected on Friday that changes to voting rules will see everyone in this boat able to vote in the Federal Election, albeit not in person either.
