Liberal Democrats Senator David Leyonhjelm used senate estimates this week to ask a representative from the Office for Women why there isn’t an Office for Men.

This is, of course, the same Senator David Leyonhjelm who called journalist Angela Bishop a “bitch” and told Greens Senator Sarah Hanson-Young that she should “stop shagging men”.

The guy’s a bit of a fuckstain, is what I’m saying.

Fortunately, Greens Senator Larissa Waters was also present at estimates, and she was not going to put up with Leyonhjelm’s bullshit.

Leyonhjelm began by asking Trish Bergin, First Assistant Secretary of the Office for Women, whether her work would be undermined “if there was also an Office for Men?”

“It is called parliament,” Waters interjected.

Leyonhjelm continued with his line of questioning, asking Bergin whether her work would be “assisted” by an Office for Men, and suggesting that such an office could ensure that “men and their children were safe from violence”.

At this point, Waters interjected again.

“You realise most perpetrators are men?” she asked Leyonhjelm. “That’s kind of the point.”

Leyonhjelm also asked whether there was “any discomfort or concern” in the Office for Women “about the absence of any focus on men” — to which Bergin responded that they actually focus on a number of issues concerning men, such as encouraging them to take a more active role in family and domestic life.

But the kicker came when Leyonhjelm asked whether there were “any instances where your office could be seen to be improving the lives of Australian women at the expense of Australian men?”

“Oh God” scoffed Waters, before Bergin replied with a slightly incredulous “I don’t believe so”.

Waters subsequently shared footage of Leyonhjelm’s performance on Twitter, along with a pointed caption highlighting some of the issues the Office for Women deals with, including the gender pay gap and domestic violence. You can give it a watch below.
