The story of the Dark Phoenix Saga is foundational, iconic, mythological, to the world of the X-Men.

Given how hit and extremely miss all the X-Men films have been, there’s kind of been a mingled sense of dread and resignation about once again seeing this classic story brought to shambling life on the big screen again.

It seems only yesterday we were watching an older and more Dutch Jean Grey (Framke Janssen) do the whole Phoenix thing in X-Men: Last Stand (2006), but here we are again, and everything is more Sophie Turner.

X-Men trailers are basically the prince of lies, and often do a good job of making very ordinary films look exciting — especially to someone like me, who still has the flickering hope that one day my favourite superhero team will be respected on screen.

So, with that hefty grain of salt, I gotta say that I like the look of this goddamn trailer!

Sure, it basically summarises the whole movie — the X-Men are in space now, there’s a cosmic force, Jean Grey can’t control it, hi-jinks ensue.

“When I lose control, bad things happen” she says. Yep! That’s Dark Phoenix in a nutshell.

But I dunno — look at the White Queen, she seems creepy.

Watch the trailer! X-Men: Dark Phoenix hits Australian cinemas this June 6.
